After Messi, someone set this record for Barca…

Last night, Barcelona drew 1-1 at Athletic Bilbao in the second round of La Liga. In the 50th minute, Inigo Martinez opened the scoring for Bilbao. Until the 75th minute, Memphis Depay fixed a 1-1 draw for Barca.

One of the highlights of the match took place in the 63rd minute when Yusuf Demir replaced Martin Braithwaite on the Barca side. This is the first official appearance of the Austrian winger for the Catalunya team.

Demir moved to Barca from his hometown club, Rapid Wien on loan with an option to buy 10 million euros this summer. When Barca overcame Real Sociedad 4-2 in the opening round of La Liga, the boy born in 2003 was on the bench and could not enter the field.

When it came to the match against Bilbao, Demir was given a chance. At 18 years and 80 days, he became the youngest non-Spanish player to play for Barca in La Liga in nearly 17 years.

Previously, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi was the holder of this record. The legend who just left the Blaugrana summer 2021 made his debut for the club in La Liga in October 2004 at the age of 17 years and 114 days.

Speaking after the game, Barca coach Ronald Koeman expected Demir to learn and benefit from the experience against Bilbao. “It’s a bit difficult for Demir to step out onto a big football field like San Mames because he’s so young,” he said.

“But it would be good for Demir to make his debut here as he adapts to football at the top level.”

Demir trained in Rapid Vienna and made his Austrian league debut in 2019 at the age of 16. Before coming to Barca, the winger made a total of 38 appearances for the Austrian capital team.

Demir made his first appearance for the Austrian national team in March of this year. That’s when he came on from the bench for the final five minutes of their 3-1 win over the Faroe Islands in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Before that, Demir was a member of the youth teams from U17 to U21 Austria, playing 18 matches and scoring 10 goals. This is a player born in Austria but in a family of Turkish origin.
