2019 was a busy year for Vietnamese football. After finishing the Asian U23 qualifier, King’s Cup 2019, our team will attend another very important tournament, the 2022 World Cup qualifier.
After the success of the teams in the past time, more than ever, the home fans are looking forward to our boys realizing the dream of the World Cup.
However, contrary to the fans’ expectations, coach Le Thuy Hai frankly admitted that Vietnam is still not strong enough to attend the World Cup.
Mr. Hai “Lo” also said that fans should not expect too much and put pressure on coach Park Hang Seo’s teachers and students.
This veteran strategist was quite frank when sharing about Vietnam’s opportunity to attend the World Cup:
“Everybody wants to go to the World Cup, but Vietnam’s ability has not come yet. In Southeast Asia, we have just won the championship for the second time, and the continent has nothing.
Thanks to recent successes, Vietnam has a good ranking, but in my opinion that is not enough. If you want to enter the World Cup, at least the Vietnamese team must be in the Top 7 teams in Asia. With the current position, this is still difficult.
If you are lucky enough to meet the right groups, Vietnam can completely pass the second qualifying round. Because the opponents there also do not have many teams that have attended the World Cup.
But to go deeper is difficult, extremely difficult. Because the number is less and less, Vietnam will have to meet very strong teams. Therefore, I affirm, if the fans expect to attend the World Cup Finals, it will not be possible. At this moment, even in 2022, we are not strong enough.”
According to Mr. Hai, instead of heading to the 2022 World Cup, the Vietnam Football Federation needs to continue to invest in potential youth such as U17, U19 or U23.
And with such a synchronous investment, the day for us to come to the World Cup will not be far away.
